Starting a Small Consulting Business

There is a lot that goes into starting a small consulting business. However, if you organize properly, you'll be able to up and running in no time. Since a small consulting home business usually involves just you, the main goal is to keep things simple. This mantra will help you when you're starting your small business and in the long run. While we cannot go over everything about starting a business, we'll discuss a few things to help get you started and going in the right direction.

The first thing you want to do is sit down in a quiet place and start thinking about your business's offering. With a consulting business, you are offering your services. In other words you are planning to make money from the skills you acquired during your life time. So you want to make a list of all of your jobs and the skill sets involved for each job. If you have listed multiple skills and are getting confused, don't worry. Your list will come in handy.

Now you want to go through that list and find out if there is a need for those skills. In other words you want to see if there's a paying market for your skill set. While you are researching, you'll be writing down niches you want to serve. While you're researching your skills, you will be figuring out who your client will be. This work will help lead me to the next step in starting a small business......

Now that you have an idea of what type of consulting you're offering, you need to write a business plan. Why write a business plan you ask? A business plan is basically a document that describes the scope and vision of the business and how you intend to fulfill it. If you don't know how to create a business plan, there is plenty of software and books that can help you. However, all you need to do is answer the following questions to get you started.

1. What is the mission and target market of your consulting business?

2. How does one make money in your business (i.e. what is your hourly rate)?

3. How will I get clients for my business and start making money?

After you answer these questions, you must know there will be many more. You also want to make sure of the structure of your business. For example, do you want to incorporate your business or do you want to file a business name alias? After you decide how to structure the business then you'll have enough to focus on making money for your business.

So you can see starting a small consulting business can be broken down into simple steps but some of them are not easy to do. Hopefully using the information above will help you generate a workable plan to make things easier for you.
